2007-08 Sacramento Kings

The good thing coming back from a disappointing season for the Kings is Kevin Martin. His scoring average almost doubled, and he is a pure scorer. The Kings would be well advised to extend his contract, which ends next season. Ron Artest also shows improvement coming into ’07-08.  The downside to this is Brad Miller, whose game is going downhill. The Kings seem to have lost faith in his numbers as well, by drafting Spencer Hawes. Ticket buyers to Kings games can expect young talent, maybe even a possible rebuild. Hey, the Western Conference is loaded, and changes will need to be made for the Kings to make the playoffs.

Previous Seasons

The Sacramento Kings can trace their team history back to 1945 when they played in Rochester as the Rochester Royals. The Royals played in Rochester until 1957 when they made a move to Cincinnati where they lasted until 1972. After a short stint as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, the franchise stabilized and played as the Kansas City Kings from 1975-1985 before once again moving, this time to Sacramento, California where the became the Sacramento Kings.

That first year in Sacramento saw the Kings delight California basketball fans with a 37-45 record and a playoff spot. The happiness was short-lived though as the Kings were blown away by the Houston Rockets after only three games. It would be ten long years before Sacrament saw another NBA Playoff game. During that time the Kings struggled to put together a winner, and endured a string of losing seasons. In 1996 the Kings used a late season spurt to secure a playoff spot although they didn’t break .500. Once again the Kings were ousted in the first round, this time by the Seattle Supersonics.

It wasn’t until the 2001-02 season that the Kings made a serious run at the NBA Crown. The Suns engineered a trade for point guard Mike Bibby that paid off big dividends. Bibby pushed the Kings to the NBA’s best record at 61-21 and a playoff berth. After eliminating the Utah Jazz in the first round, the Kings moved on to a five game series win over the Dallas Mavericks that propelled them to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in Kings’ history. The Kings and the Lakers slugged it out in a contest for the ages. With the series at 1-1, the Kings knocked off the Lakers in Game 3. Leading late in Game 4, the Kings blew a chance to take a two game lead on the Lakers when Robert Horry hit an unlikely 3-point shot as the clock wound down, giving the Lakers the win. With their backs against the wall, Sacramento rallied to win Game 5 when Bibby hit a late jumper to put the Kings up 92-91. The dream ended with a foul filled Game 6 that Los Angeles won 106-102 and a heartbreaking overtime loss on the Lakers home court.
