2010/11 Sacramento Kings

After finishing last season with a 5th place finish in the Pacific Division, 2nd year head coach Paul Westphal is looking to toughen up his team while beefing up his backcourt. Adding to the Jason Thompson are rookies DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside as well as journeyman Samuel Dalmbert who joined the team after being traded for Spencer Hawes and Andres Nocioni. In the draft, the Kings selected C DeMarcus Cousins (5th overall draft selection) and PF/C Hassan Whiteside (33rd overall selection).

2009/10 Sacramento Kings

After firing interim coach Kenny Natt and his entire staff and armed with the worst record in the NBA in 2008-09, the Kings franchise went out and hired former player and head coach Paul Westphal to lead the team into the 2009-10 NBA Season. With a good shot at landing the top draft pick, the Kings were hoping for a little luck in the ball bouncing department but none was to be had as they were selected to draft the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. The team used this pick to select SG Tyreke Evans with the 4th overall pick. With the 23rd overall pick, the Kings selected Israeli SF Omri Casspi and with the 31st overall pick selected Jeff Pendergraph. With all the young players, the team has no true leadership to help lead them and as such, the team has suffered. Currently, the Kings are in 13th place in the Western Conference and have the third worst record in the NBA at 18-38.

The Sacramento Kings can trace their team history back to 1945 when they played in Rochester as the Rochester Royals. The Royals played in Rochester until 1957 when they made a move to Cincinnati where they lasted until 1972. After a short stint as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, the franchise stabilized and played as the Kansas City Kings from 1975-1985 before once again moving, this time to Sacramento, California where the became the Sacramento Kings.

That first year in Sacramento saw the Kings delight California basketball fans with a 37-45 record and a playoff spot. The happiness was short-lived though as the Kings were blown away by the Houston Rockets after only three games. It would be ten long years before Sacramento saw another NBA Playoff game. During that time the Kings struggled to put together a winner, and endured a string of losing seasons. In 1996 the Kings used a late season spurt to secure a playoff spot although they didn’t break .500. Once again the Kings were ousted in the first round, this time by the Seattle Supersonics.
